Selfhelp Community Services is a leading provider of independent senior living and home care services in New York City. In 2013, IBI Group completed the state-of-the-art KVII building, with over 92,000 square feet of residential use including 36 studios and 55 one-bedroom units outfitted with gallery-style kitchens and three-fixture bathrooms featuring roll-in showers.  Within the residential building a total of 3,600 square feet of social and welfare community space is provided, as mandated by the building’s NPRE status.

The organization is a leader in technological integration within senior living environments, demonstrated through a number of embedded amenities offered at KVII. A Virtual Senior Center allows homebound residents to participate in social activities taking place remotely at one of Selfhelp’s Senior Centers.  At the building residents also have access to video conference rooms, computer areas, and flexible spaces for religious observances, chair yoga, and table games.

Technology plays a key role in the physical well-being of residents. Wireless remote monitoring inside units provides support for frail elders living alone and telehealth kiosks in the lobby and community spaces provide additional self-tracking with remote professional monitoring.

The building’s design embraces natural lighting, flooding the lobby to create a bright and welcoming common space for residents to meet and socialize. Outside, a large garden space, benching, and shaded trellis on a sunny rooftop garden encourage residents to enjoy the outdoors while staying on campus. A 12,200 square foot community facility with separate street entry fronts the building.
